Water efficiency questions in need of solutions

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

The big questions arising in the UK water industry today are principally centred around:

  • Climate change
  • Population growth and distribution
  • Lifestyle changes and single occupancy homes
  • Industry experts say that the scale, complexity and uncertainty of these combined challenges need a new response.

Innovation is the buzz word and the cure of many ills it would seem. But how do you get innovative in an industry that by the nature of its product must be risk averse?

Innovation is the product of trying something untried and untested, of taking risks, learning from failures. These are not traits that you would typically associate or maybe even want to associate with the people who are supplying your water.

But without inventiveness and a taste for what’s new, the industry finds itself faced with few solutions to tackle the big questions. Dr Paul Leinster and others chastise the water industry for the scariness of its current technologies developed decades ago.

“While we still pee in drinking quality water, we cannot accept we have a sustainable water supply and treatment approach”. Dr Leinster Chief Executive The Envrionment Agency

All the signs are there that a new course of action must be adopted but where do you begin?

How do you break down these big challenges into chunks that can meaningfully be handled?

How do you scale a response that does enough to make an impact whilst managing any detrimental outcomes?

How do you move the debate on from discussion to action?

In the public sector large initiatives and wholesale solutions have in many cases proven costly and not always effective. The public sector is now responding through the use of small scale projects that can be tried and tested before roll out. The risks are lower, innovation is more adventurous and they have more chance of delivering.

And it’s not just the size of the project that is important. It is also clear that the real alchemy is achieved when the creativity of an entrepreneurial mindset is coupled with industy expertise. Typically the talent that these projects need won’t be found in large corporations.

At Web Project People we believe that our team can help water industry experts to define and deliver medium to large scale projects. We’re a bunch of entrepreneurs with plenty of experience of using creativity, web technologies and project management to try something new. We would love to work with your team to find some of the answers to these very important questions.

    What’s An Un-Conference?

    Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Our definition of an un-conference is an informal get together of people who want to comment on, solve or input in any way on a topic that interests them.

Usually the topic is about a major challenge, an issue that needs resolving. It’s about rolling up your sleeves and jumping straight into the task. It is also a stimulating experience because we use lots of creative techniques that prompt new trains of thought and perspectives.

It’s work but it doesn’t feel like it. Energy flows and you leave with a sense of achievement as ideas abound and new plans form.

If you are interested in hosting an Un-Conference and would like some help with the facilitation please contact us

    Reboot Britain

    Thursday, July 9th, 2009

I keep chickens and last week I heard that someone in my area had 2000 ex-battery hens or (re-chargers) who urgently needed a home. I love my chickens but when I imagine 2000 hens at once I feel slightly sick.

I was more than keen to help out though, and wanted to add to our little family. On contacting the lady in charge of the re-homing, I was astounded to hear that her charity had found homes for 10,000 hens in just 6 weeks. And they had a waiting list for more!

Ok they had a good incentive because it was either that or the slaughterhouse but this is pretty impressive stuff.

    Well done Little Hen Rescue!

This leads me to the recent Reboot Britain get together. Paul Miller from The School of Everything  made the point very well that one of the biggest opportunities on the web today is the ability to organise real stuff via cyberspace. I agree with him and my chicken story bears out that the impact is not insignificant. Can you imagine how a small charity to save battery hens could have  achieved such astounding results without the power of the web?

The good news is that we haven’t seen the best yet and, as Paul says, there is plenty of big stuff to be achieved orgainsing real world needs:

Imagine using the web more creatively to:

    • organise health
    • organise water
    • organise poverty
    • organise sustainability
    • and so on……where are the boundaries?

We will soon be organising something that we think is pretty important. A free un-conference on water efficiency in the UK. Register for free now.

    Water Efficiency Un-Conference: London

    Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

A free Water Efficiency Un-Conference was held on 19th August 09 at the Water UK offices in Queen Anne’s Terrace

The aim was to get like minded individuals together for an open, facilitated discussion about the key challenges faced on water efficiency – outputs and conclusions from the discussion

The result was a very thorough discussion that led to some key insights. If you would like to find out more about the un-conference approach
